Throttle Cable Stiff?

Up until yesterday I thought it was a littler stiff to move the throttle forward or backyard. Yesterday I put it in forward and it went in reverse. Turned the motor off for a few minutes, restarted and then had no forward or reverse. You guys think its a cable or maybe a shifter?

1990 OMC Cobra 4.3

I asked a local mechanic and he thinks ,without seeing it, its the cable which means the OD must be removed. Is that true?

Yes...it needs to be removed. Not a big deal to remove the drive. You should be doing it annually anyway.

Definitely the lower shift cable.

The title of your post is misleading. Not sure why you posted Throttle cable. Has nothing to do with throttle cable.

Wasn't sure and thats why the ?. I also thought it might be throttle because when you push it forward it takes a little muscle and I think it should be able to be moved with 1 finger. What confused me is that now it won't move forward or reverse but why then was it difficult to move when it did?

Because the cable is probably shot. Replacing it is not that big a deal if u know how to do the adjustment. I did mine in about 4 hrs, drive off, cable r&r & adjusted, drive back on. With a couple of beers thrown in for good measure.

The throttle cable doesn't come into the picture until the control is moved past the shifting portion of the control the movement. For example, the first 45 degrees moves the shift cable and all movement after that moves the throttle cable.

Where in SoCal are you?

Re: Throttle Cable Stiff?

I am in Riverside. Its my sons boat and he took it in to a mechanic and he showed him its the upper shift cable. He thinks it may have come off at the control so my son left it there. Next week however I'm pulling his drive for the service. Never did it before but I figure it should be fairly easy. My concern is the gimbal and bellows. Since I will have it off I figure I'll replace them. Are you in So Cal too?
