Throttle control

I have just replaced the neutral safety switch on my boat. The engine fires up great and you can increase the rpm with the throttle control without a problem. When I go to push the button in to engage the prop and then push forward the whole engine shuts down. If I try to go in reverse nothing happens. This is on an OMC 175 1978 model. Before I replaced the switch it would go into gear just fine. Not sure what I messed up.
