Hey Just bought a 1989 bowrider openbow larson dc with a v6. I guess the throttle/ gear box is going (if thats what its called) and the marina said they could replace it but the part is 700 bucks. I did my own research and found some for around 200-300 bucks.

Questions is, is this unit hard to take out and replace with a new one? I think there are 2 cables that connect to it but im not sure. Im looking to by the part overtons and paying this guy I know 100 bucks to put it in. He has worked on boats before and doesnt see it as a problems but you know how that goes. So do you think I should have faith in him to install it? or should I bring it to the marina. At the marina in the long run I will probably end up paying like 500 to 600 more than if this guy does it.

Reason y im replacing it is because it stiff when I try to throttle it up. Have to push kinda hard. Not too too bad though, Probably looking to do this end or mid summer aftear a get about 7 nice weekends out of the boat. Any and all help would be great.
Thanks
Dave

Whoa...dont start buying anything!!! i'll bet you 2 million its the cables not the throttle, cables are easy to replace, and cheaper than control box's.

Anyway...the cables are removed from the control box by opening the box by removing the screws that secure it to the bulkhead, the cable ends snap into specific slots. one for throttle one for forward/reverse. on the engine side the cables are attached to the carb on ib/ob..and the levers on outboards. Remove the cables then go to overtons and get the correct length cables...as for your control box..while you have it open ,lube everything with marine lube. your gonna have alot smoother response at the throttle.
