Throttle linkage adjustment

I have a Mercury 80 HP outboard, serial # 3052377. I was having some reverse lock problems, but solved that - thanks for the help. On the lake test 2 days ago, the motor ran smooth and strong. Hate to touch it, but the idle is way to high. In the garage yesterday, I noticed that in nuetral, the distributer/carb unit did not return all the way to the idle stop screw. I adjusted the brass barrel on the cable to bring it to the idle stop screw, but now it wont travel to WOT.

When I disconnect the cable, and move the distributer/carb linkage by hand it goes fairly easy but does not spring back to idle on its own. Is the spring worn out, or is that normal ?
Thanks ahead,.

Re: Throttle linkage adjustment

Sounds like you have a broken or dislodged spring.

Re: Throttle linkage adjustment

My Solec manual shows a spring (a half bar type) on the outside of the distributer below the "economiser collar". That is in place and seems to be more "springy" towards WOT. Is that normal ? Is there another spring that helps the linkages return to idle? Or is the throttle cable suppose to do all the work? Thanks

Re: Throttle linkage adjustment

Look for one on the carb throttle shaft(s). There may also be one on a timing linkage.

Re: Throttle linkage adjustment

My computer and I keep struggling posting replies. Hope this is not repetative.
My Solec manual shows an external spring (half bar shape) on the outside of the distributer, below the "economiser collar". That spring is in place and is definitely "springy" towards WOT. Zero pull force back to idle though. Is that normal? Is there another spring that assists the linkage back to idle? Or is the throttle cable/linkage suppose to do all the work?
Thanks
