I have a 1975 50hp Evinrude. Throttle and shift cables have been replaced and work great. No problems occur at the engine. For some reason the throttle lever randomly locks up. It has locked up in all three positions: forward, neutral, and reverse. To temporarily fix it, I can take the throttle box completely apart, pull the large black gear all the way out, put it back in, and reassemble everything. It will work fine for a couple of days then lock up again. This last time the throttle jammed, it was in forward and could move throughout all forward positions. This is the first time it did not lock up completely. It would not slip back into neutral.

As this is a pontoon boat, I'm not crazy about the idea of paddling back to shore. Does anyone have suggestions?

Stuff I know: the throttle lever itself is not loose or wiggle excessively; both the neutral switch and ball w/spring are intact; the shift and throttle levers that are attached to the cables appear to move freely when all is well; I can move the throttle and shift arms on the motor with my fingers

Thanks to all who may have an answer!!
