I have a 1970 85 horse Johnson, the throttle moves backward when I let go of it the only way that I can go fast is to keep my hand on the lever.

Most controls have a throttle friction knob which sets the tension on how easily the controls move, if your's has one, increasing the friction will help hold the throttle in the desired position without holding your hand on the control all the time...

Personally once my boat is on plane, I always have my hands on or near the control. You never know when you will have to cut the throttle, especially one a busy waterway...
