Hello, I made a search, using throttle response, and received 107 hits on messages, but found none seemed to fit my problem. Have a "94" Johnson 40 two cylender twin carbs that first time in water in probably three months (with freshly mixed fuel, auto oiler has been disconnected, and oil feed line plugged) the motor will not run at full power unless the choke knob is held in. Have sprayed carb cleaner thru carbs, and seems to help, but still will not run at speed. Thanks in advance for any help for a new member of the forum.

Re: throttle response

Mornin' Secessio,

Spraying carb cleaner thru the carb throats will likely do more harm then good. It will clean the oil/lube off of the motor internals.

From what you've stated, it does sound like a carb problem.

Would STRONGLY suggest purchasing a manual, remove, clean & rebuild carbs. The only way to effectively clean a carb is to disassemble it.

OEM manuals are best. More specific/less generic then aftermarket manuals. These can be expensive and may be difficult to find (check your OMC dealer or Kencook.com). After market manuals can be found at the link at bottom of this page. I prefer Seloc over the Clymer.

Let us know how things work out.

Good Luck
HAVE FUN!

Secession,

If you have to hold the choke in, it sounds like it isn't getting enough gas. You might want to check your fuel line. Try squeezing the fuel bulb when it does this and see if it picks up that way. If it does, it could be a fuel pump problem.

Did you check the vent on the tank? Make sure the vent is open. I've done that a few times myself

Let us know,

Shane

Re: throttle response

secession

I'll second that carb rebuild. If it goes when the choke is pushed, the carbs are clogged up. The choke injects fuel directly into the engine, bypassing the carb jets, therefore giving you the extra power and fuel that the carbs cannot supply. You can order rebuild kits at the link below or at your dealer. Kit Number is 396701.

web page

Re: throttle response

^When I first started having this problem, The bulb would not pump up connected to 12 gal tank, but disconected would, and I thought I heard air bubbles in tank when pumping, so went to wally's world and bought a 6gal and it improved but did not fix, same as the carb spray. I sort of suspicioned I needed to rebuild carbs, before I found ya'll but thought I might get some good ideas that might replace that, such as the pumping bulb while running, as a check for the fuel pump. I thank ya'll, and hope I get a couple more ideas from the forum, to try before I attempt the carb rebuild, havn't did that in years, and then it was with automobile carbs, back 30 or 40 years ago. I wish I had found this forum a few years back, as I will be a regular visitor now, and will try to read back through all of the old postings.
Many thanks,

Man - you must love to read! Well - there are those who love to read poetry - and I guess there are a couple of us that would rather read about old broken motors.

Well Solittle, you would be surprised what I have learned in 69 years of reading, and you never get too old to learn from you youngsters. :D

Re: throttle response

Sorry about that, secession, and lakeman1999 are one and the same, I thought it denied me membership of Lakeman, and lakeman1999, so my third choice was secession, now I discovered I am registered as both lakeman1999, and secession, will try to have secession deleted.
