Re: throttle slack adjustment 15HP johnson (1985)
Hi Brothere,
There isn't any "adjustment" per se, rather there is probably a worn part somewhere in the chain of command. The grip is attached to a shaft (rarely any slop involved), which is attached to the first ball gear. This gear drives the second ball gear - often wear occurs between them. If the gears are okay, then they in turn drive a nylon pin, approx. 6-inches long with squared ends. On end rides in the second ball gear, and the other end drives a splined gear at the base of the throttle tower. That gear drives a vertical gear, which is in turn driving the throttle tower arm. The arm is attached to the magneto plate. Slop can occur in the base gears - either in the gears themselves or in the bushings that the gears ride in. The nylon pin that connects the ball gears to the throttle tower gears can also wear at the squared ends, as can the squared holes in the gears.
I would work my way from the handle back, looking for excess wear on any of the parts. If something is overly sloppy, you might be able to enact a temporary fix by taping up the nylon pin, or the like, but a permanent fix would mean replacing the worn parts.
- Scott
