Throttle 'sticky'

When acclerating, if I smoothly move the throttle up, the engine rpms change in jumps, instead of a smooth increase. Makes docking very hard since I go from not moving to like 5mph speed with nothing in between. Is this an issue with the throttle mechanism, the cables in between or the linkage at the carb? How do I figure it out?

Usually when I've had this problem, its been a throttle cable. Easy way to see if its at the carb is to simply disconnect the cable and work the carb lever manually. If it feels smooth, thats not the issue. You can also unhook the cable at the throttle lever end and work the lever. If it moves smooth, the only other thing in the chain is the cable. You should be able to slide it fairly smoothly without anything hooked to it.

And if it's the cable can I lube it somehow or does that mean it's replacement time?

OK, thanks guys. Now up to this point I've only been buying parts for the engine. Where do I find parts for the boat itself like this replacment throttle cable? It's a Wellcraft Classic 190. Or is that still considered an engine part?

Most marinas can get you that stuff. What you'll need is the length of the cable. The number printed on the cable jacket has the length in it, though I'll admit I forget how to read them. If you give the number to your parts people, they should be able to get you whats needed.
