Hey guys took the boat out today and when I put it into reverse to back off trailer, the throttle stuck in reverse. After messing with it for a bit I was a ble to get it to go forward, but then it was stuck in forward. Hehe. After riding around for a bit it finally loosened up, but I am sure it is going to be a problem next time I go out. Please help! Do I need to lubricate something or replace something?

Many outboard control boxes have throttle friction screws on them....check it out and loosen the friction screw a bit...

Since you said what you did about F and R one would suspect the box or cables and not the engine. To verify, disconnect the shifter from the engine and see how it feels. Cables especially will get corroded with time and increase friction making for stiff shifting. As Robert said, the friction screw is a simple place to start, but in all reality since the problem apparently just occurred, unless you have been "diddling" with the screw it' probably cable corrosion.

I would disassemble the shifter and disconnect the shift cable on both ends and see if it moves freely or hangs up. If the cable is bad I suggest you replace both throttle and shifter cables at the same time. Take this as an opportunity to clean and lube the shifter as well as the motor linkage too while your at it, You may as well do a complete job of it.
