Throttle tension adjustment needed for 6HP Evinrude

I have a 1979 6hp Evinrude motor with a grip throttle. I would like to tighten the throttle so when I'm trolling I don't have to keep holding the grip. This motor always idles down to the lowest idle speed when you take your hand off the grip. Is there a way to tighten something in the handle to get the throttle to stay at the desired trolling speed or is there an adjustment near the cam follower that controls the throttle tension.

Ken.... There is no friction adjustment on that engine. There should be a friction block, spring, and washer inside the throttle handle that applies pressure to keep the handle from moving. Some boaters remove it for some unknown reason.

Remove the throttle handle and take a look there. The OMC numbers of the parts are: Washer 303252, Spring 301656, Friction Block 303282.

They total to about $8.50 or so. If you need them and can't find them, contact me via e-mail and I'll mail them to you for $5 which includes shipping. ReevesJ32@aol.com

Joe,

Thanks for the help. I had the handle apart, but I didn't replace the spring. I'll try getting a new handle spring here locally in Seattle. Thanks again. I'll quit beating my head against the wall now.

Ken
