Re: throttle valve sensor

depends on what motor we are discussing.
basically they give information to another device on throttle angle.

Re: throttle valve sensor

best I remember on hat engine its a switch not a sensor and it controls ign timing.

Re: throttle valve sensor

What is the purpose of this ? What does it specificaly do.

What is the purpose of your thread?

Is your motor malfunctioning or are you just interested in how certain parts work?

Re: throttle valve sensor

Yes it is malfunctioning. Cranks and idles fine but dies when I give it the throttle. So far I have--- drained and cleaned tank, replaced all fuel lines and double clamped for air leakage, new fittings on fuel hose and engine, rebuilt fuel pump, new kits in carbs, adjusted floats, checked spark and gap , checked compression. With all of this behind me I am starting to think that this is not fuel related but may be electrical or cooling.
I have the original Suzuki manual and am trying to learn as I save. Thanks

Re: throttle valve sensor

Now it makes sense. Couple questions..

Did it ever run right?, I mean did something happen and now you have this problem?

Do you have the original Suzuki repair manual or the owner's manual?

What were your compression numbers?

Rodbolt had it right, the tps on that motor is a switch that at a certain throttle angle it tells the cdi to advance the timing. I have a 85 dt65 with the correct manual that explains and shows the angles and timing advance, I would think it's the same for the 87. If you don't have the repair manual I can email a copy of the pages that address the testing of the tps. Let me know.

Re: throttle valve sensor

Thanks- Yes it ran right up to about two years ago. Did'nt get a chance to use but a couple times last year and it gave me fits.
I have the Suzuki service manual from Brownspoint Marine. The electrical is where I fail as a shade-tree mech.Rodbolt was thinking about the idle speed adjusting switch when he answered my post above. Hopefully with more info provided he will chime in with his thoughts.
I still want to know what exactly the throttle valve sensor (does or controls) when I throttle up. Thanks

Re: throttle valve sensor

Re-read my last post.

You know a lot about your motor over the years given all the checks and repairs you've made, we only know what you write and how well you communicate the info to us. Rodbolt was talking about the correct tps switch and I gave you a brief explaination of what that motor's tps does. The Suzuki shop manual has several pages on the operation and checking of the tps, I'm wondering if you have a clymer or seloc manual. What were your compression numbers?

Re: throttle valve sensor

It's an original Suzuki service manual.
compression #'s
top-126,middle-124,bottom-127...........Thanks

Re: throttle valve sensor

Thanks for the numbers, makes me feel more at home. Just so I'm clear, are you saying that your 1987 manual does not explain the operation and testing of the tps? My 1985 manual does that and includes charts and graphs outlining its behavior during operation. It's really pretty easy to check with a multimeter.

Re: throttle valve sensor

rodbolt was NOT thinking of the idle speed switch, which also controls timing.
rodbolt was refering to the TVS, throttle valve SWITCH.
its an on off switch on your engine.
later versions went tp a TPS,throtle position sensor.
sensors give a varying voltage feedbck, switchs are on or off.
this switch at a certain angle turns on and the ign timig advances.

Re: throttle valve sensor

Thanks Rodbolt. After further reading I have the later version sensor. Could it be that as I give throttle, the sensor is not advancing timing thus causing the engine to bog down? Thanks

Re: throttle valve sensor

in your maual is the test procedure.
typically it wont cause a bogging just a lack of power. use a timig light and check ign timig for proper advance.

Re: throttle valve sensor

Thanks- will check timing and report results after I find someone with a timing light. This gives me a start. Is there anything else anyone can recommend I check? Thanks
