Hi all,

I have a '99 Stingray 190 RX w/ a M 4.3 190HP-ALPHA and the throttle will not shift into gear.

If I push in the neutral button to put it in neutral so I can pump and start the engine it works fine, but when I bring it back to "12 oclock" , squeeze the red button under the handle and try to push forward or back it will not move.

Every once and a while, if I jiggle it it will release but then it goes back to sticking again. If I look behind the "stick" attached to the handle, I see a red piece, that I think, wants to go up and down to clear the path so it will shift

This happened only once at the very end of last season as we were taking the boat out, but then it worked and I forgot about it all until I tried to put her in a week ago and was not able to launch.

Not sure of the exact throttle - pretty sure it is a qucksilver 3000....I think this image (model 3000) is the one - http://tinyurl.com/cky9qr7

I have not tried to take it apart. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Re: Throttle won'g go into forward or reverse

The throttle only button works by sliding a shaft back and forth to disengage the gearshift. Probably just sticking and in need of lube. You can remove the handle and try to put a little oil a (not WD40) in there. Don't know which control you have, may be a setscrew underneath or a retaining nut. To remove the handle with the nut, push in the TO button and push the throttle forward, then pop the button out with a small screwdriver, remove the retaining nut and CAREFULLY remove the handle and you should be able to spray some oil in there to loosen things up. Commander 3000 Classic Panel Mount. It has the retaining nut. Here is a diagram http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...7&bnbr=35&bdesc=Modular+Components(Design+II) If it is not engaging gear parts !) and 11 are probably sticking. Hope this helpa a little. Good luck.

Thanks Terry, I was calling it the neutral button, but I guess the correct term is Throttle Only. So you think it may be sticking which will not allow me to squeeze the handle and then put it into gear?

I added a link to a picture after you posted that I think this is a quicksilver 3000 model, not a commander (unless they are similar.)

Re: Throttle won'g go into forward or reverse

Yeah I saw that photo, late. The way it works is pretty straight forward. There are two sets of levers in there on a shaft and they work together to shift into gear and advance the throttle. When you push the TO button a small shaft with a notch in it slides back and the pin that holds the shift lever to the shaft drops down and disengages the shift lever, and when you push the throttle only the throttle lever moves. If that sliding shaft (#10 in the diagram) sticks and does not pop back out the shift stays disengaged. Anyway I think that is your problem. Been a long time since I had mine apart.

Here are the handle removal instructions from the manual.

Commander 3000 Panel Mount Handle and Bezel Disassembly
1. Push the throttle‑only button in and place the control handle in a throttle‑only position.
2. Use a small screwdriver to remove the throttle‑only button.
NOTE: The throttle‑only button can only be removed when the control is in the throttle‑only
position. Move control handle to the throttle‑only position
3. Remove the nut securing the control handle to the control module assembly.
4. Pull the control handle off the control module assembly and disconnect the trim switch
wire harness connector.

Hopefully that will allow you to get the lube in there.

Terry, The diagram really helps. I will try to work on this and let you know what happens. MANY Thanks!

Here are manuals for that control. If the lube doesn't help, there is a spring and a shaft that can bread or get damaged (See page 14-4 of section 14 below lower right picture). Parts are available from a Merc dealer.

Thanks for the manual pages Don. I will update when I find out what actually needs to be done.

The lubrication did the trick. She's running like a top. Thanks for all the great advice.
