Another one for ya:

My 96 Johnson 175 will not stay at a constant RPM between about 2000 and 3000 RPM. This problem has been there since I bought the boat. The carbs were recently professionally taken down and cleaned. It is not that the engine won't produce 2500 RPM, it just won't stay there. The problem only seems to occur in this particular range, which of course corresponds to a particular throttle lever position.

If I am cruising along at 2000 RPM, as I push on the throttle, there seems to be a little play in it before the engine advances, and then when it does it jumps up to around 2700-2800 quickly and then settles in around 3000. Similar thing happens when trying to reduce from 3000, it'll settle in around 2200 RPM, nothing higher.

Any suggestions? At what point do I start looking at my throttle lever and not the engine itself?

Thanks in advance.
