Through Hull Transducer mounting

I have a 19 foot fiberglass speed boat and would like to mount a through hull transducer for fish and depth. Unfortunately there doesn?t seem to be a good "flat" spot to mount it. I have a great spot but it is at an angle.

Two questions -

1 - Can it be mounted at an angle and still work properly?
2 - Does anyone have any good pictures of how they mounted it.

Thanks,

-Matt

Re: Through Hull Transducer mounting

To visualize what happens if you mount the transducer at an angle, set a cone shaped paper cup upside down on a table. That cone represents (roughly) the angle of the signal being bounced off the bottom of the lake/river. Now tilt the cup in any direction. The image you receive will now be of something to the right or left of the boat and way left or right depending on how deep the water is at the time. So no -- the transducer should not be mounted at an angle. What you can do however is cut any type of container that is slightely larger than the transducer so the bottom of the container conforms to the area of the boat in which you want to mount the transducer. The top of the container (only needs to be an inch or so high) should be parallel to the water. Now you can fill that container with epoxy making absolutely sure there are no air bubbles in it and set the transducer in the epoxy holding it perfectly vertical until the expoxy sets. You get one chance to do this so do it right. And make sure the boat is level when you do this.

I too am planning to mount a transducer in the hull... what epoxy product would you recommend to use?

Re: Through Hull Transducer mounting

I just picked up a standard tube of Epoxy at Walmart. Like three bucks and it has worked just fine. Just lightly scuff the bottom of the transducer and the place you are mounting it. I used the fast bond, maybe a minute and I used it out on the water the next day. Make sure you go out before you mount it and find out where the sweet spot is. I went in the engine compartment and had my wife look at the fish finder and tell me when the depth matched my on board depth finder. It was much easier to do than I thought it would be!
