How much of a pain is installing one of those depth finders with the thru hull transducer?
I have a huge old hummingbird fish finder.. Doesn't like to read correct when going fast.. Plus the dang thing is huge.. I have to have it mounted where it's hard to see.. So I was thinking of installing one of those little dudes, but they all seem to have to run thru hull.. Not real trilled about digging a hole in my hull... What yall think

Most thru hull transducers are for high end units. Never heard os a recreational depth sounder coming with a thru hull transducer as standard.

It's time to upgrade to a newer unit. You can get a transducer that shoots through the hull without having to drill a hole. Much more convenient, easier install, and is a lot more reliable than older units.

Keep looking. Virtually every recreational sounder may be rigged with a transom mount transducer, if that's what you'd prefer to do. That choice should be determined upon your particular boat's design, and where the best spot is to mount a transducer. Some boats do not have a good place on the transom where water flow is "clean" and some boats have accessibility problems for a thru-hull mount. Although drilling a hole (no digging allowed) in the bottom of your boat sounds scary, it's really no big deal because you're going to plug it with a carefully executed installation with the right methods and the right sealant, just like the instructions tell you.
