HELLO ALL, I AM LOOKING TO CHANGE MY EXHAUST PIPES FROM STOCK TO THRU HULL. LOOKS EASY TO TAKE OFF RUBBER PIPES AND CAP OFF Y PIPE ON MY MERCRUISER V8 305 GM MODEL 228R. NOW CAN I ADD MY NEW EXHAUST PIPES GOING UP HILL LIKE OR DO I HAVE TO STAY LEVEL OR GO SLIGHTLY DOWN HILL?
THANKS JEFF

Re: thru-hull exhaust question

1. Find the caps key
2. Turn it off.
3. If you are not using a switchable system, you need to pull engine, remove Y pipe, and install block off plate.
4. You need to have a set of flappers in your tips.
5. On a 305 there will be ZERO performance benefit.
6. Pipes should go straight through or angle down slightly.
7. You are asking for a world of trouble if you are just finding some pipe and cobbling up a system....Go check out a Corsa system for your boat.
8. If you go ahead and just cobble up something, you will soon be posting about your water reversion problems.

Thanks for the advise. Hoped I could cap off y pipe and pulling motor is not worth it. could I put a y rubber pipe and connect both ways just to get a good sound?

Also, when do you khow your exshaust risers are bad? boat is 1984 but hours are under 300. looked in clean out plugs and they were filled with metal like flakes. Cleaned out with screwdriver best I could.

Corsa switchable y's are what you need.
They are for sale on ebay used all the time. Some are pneumatic (you need the compressor) and some are electricly operated.
Pretty simple to install.
Go to ebay motors...then boat parts and accys....type "corsa" in the search to see some.

If the risers and manifolds are original they are overdue for replacemaent, even on a freshwater boat.
