Thru hull plumbing

Thanks for taking a look at my request. I'm replacing all plumbing on my aluminum boat for thru hull cooling system on a Mercruiser. I had a one-piece bronze scoop/thru hull with an inline ball valve which I discovered is not the best setup. First for the issue of galvanic corrosion b/t aluminum hull and bronze, second for the issue that ball valve offers no strength to the hull or plumbing. Here's what I'm now considering. Aluminum slotted scoop welded or bolted to hull. Stainless steel thru-hull w/gasket (recommended by guy at Groco as "not as bad as bronze on aluminum") 1/2-3/4" fiberglass backer block, and a bronze seacock with bronze 90 degree tail.

Questions I could use some direction on are:
1. Will this plan sink my boat? If so, what are better options?
2. My old thru hull pipe had 1-1/4" i.d. and 1-5/8" o.d. When choosing thru hulls, seacocks, hose fittings are they sized by i.d. or o.d.?

Re: Thru hull plumbing

hi.....welcome to iboats !

im not really sure what we are working on here.

most cooling systems are taken from the water feed off the drive.

if for some reason, you do want a below the water line thru hull.....a seacock with a strainer is the best bet.

but perhaps a little more description of what you want to do would help.

im kinda guessing that you want to re-invent a wheel here.
