Thru-hull questions

Hi guys I have a 23' cuddy berretta boat that I am currently restoring due to rotted floor and stringers and I will be removing the engine and drive also. While I am in the process of rebuilding this thing I was thinking of adding a thru-hull exhaust system, I know there wont be any advantages of hp but I just like the sound! My boat is soooo quiet it is unbelivable, and it runs real smooth I think I could set a Bic lighter on the flame arrestor at an idle without it falling over, but it to quiet for me, it sounds great out of water with the earmuffs on real nice low tone and not to loud. I definettly want switchable diverters though!!! so I dont disturb the peace at night cause my boat spends lots of nights on the water. My problem is finding a system or kit for my boat or "engine" I know every boat is different so I might have to make some adjustments, but I wanna know if they even make a kit for this setup? I looked at Corssa's site but everything was labled "King Cobra"? even the 302 I thought the King Cobra was the BB only?????? How hard are these to install? Are the factory risers ok to use? Is there any issues with the engine sucking in any water or anything? I do not mind drilling holes in the back of my boat for the exhaust ports, it would be a real good way for me to check the condition of my transom! Boy I am sure hoping it is ok!!!!!!! everything I have seen so far looks good but you know it is covered with fiberglass on both sides so it is kindove hard to tell, I know when I installed my fish finder and removed any screws from my transom area I didnt notice any rotting " my fingers are crossed and praying" there are alot of things screwed to it and nothing has givin away yet trim tabs interior parts ect. There really isnt anything special to thru- hull is there? I mean if a person wanted to they could just run pipes from the risers and just hook it up right? even though I'm wanting a good kit. Another question why do some boats have flaps and some dont????? It is things like this that is concerning me, is there suppose to be anything in there that keeps the water out? or does it matter? Also saying that my transom is in good shape is vibration an issue on the transom or are they usually ok. Thanks you guys for any advise

Ayuh,... iboats is a Busy place,...
When your thread falls Off page 1,... Well, it tends to get lost in the archives...

I'd say the main Reason that happened is because of your Driveline,... It ain't all that Popular, at All...
I Don't do OMCs Either...

If the motor's got Center riser manifolds,... You otta be able to make something work,...
Log manifolds won't work with Thru-hulls of any type...

As always, Bond-o's absolutely right! :D

If you're serious about it, talk to someone at Corsa. They'll tell you if they have a system that'll work for your engine.

Back in the early 90's I installed a set of Corsa diverters on my 23' Wellcraft (260 Merc). I called Corsa and they talked me thru all the measurements necessary to determine if the installation was feasable. I remember that there's a critical dimension from the waterline to the top of the exhaust risers- they have to be something like 2 3/4" higher or you'll get reversion (water in the engine) when slowing down.
After confirming that my application would work, I went ahead and ordered everything needed. During installation more questions came up and they were happy to help. Once I even got the owner, Mr. Browning.
All in all, my installation went pretty well, but for me it was VERY tough to drill 2 HUGE holes (4" I think) thru the transom. Remember- measure twice, cut once! I used a pilot drill to locate the holes exactly, and I'm glad I did because my initial measurements were about 1" off.
Good luck!

Here's a shot of the transom. I paid extra for the diagonally cut tips but I think they look better.
They had internal flappers to keep the water out.

Here's a shot from the INSIDE. The port diverter is visible below the bilge blower.

And lastly- here's the dash. Notice the last rocker switch on the right- it's labelled "EXHAUST". It was cool to be able to make it quiet or loud at the push of a button.
I seriously considered labelling it "LOUD"!:D

Re: Thru-hull questions

Thanks for the reply Bond-o, and yeah I understand the OMC's are not that popular and had recalls on the cables and had some other problems, but I got to admit my engine has been absolutely flawless in the last 10 yrs, I have owned it I couldnt be happier with the motor, I havnt touched it!!!! No tune up at all, the previous owner put splitfire plugs in it and there still in there, same plug wires and all in 10 yrs. and it still purrs like a kitten. I have however replaced the starter and fuel water seperater but that is to be expected. It couldnt be a better engine, the outdrive however is a different story I blew the upper ring and pinion gears to pieces one time but that seemed to be the only damage, I replaced them with the 5.0L gears cause I was low on cash and found a brand new set on ebay for half the price, I knocked 5 mph off the top speed by doing so though but I think the 5.0 gears are more sturdy and it planes alot quicker out of the hole, has more low end power. no problems with it since that was about 5 yrs. ago.The Omc's cable adjustments are very critical though if you dont have them absolutelly perfect then it dosnt shift worth a crap and can chew up the lower gears, I have avoided this though because I knew of the issue and mine shifts like a dream. my fishing boat has a 40hp Johnson it has OMC stamped on it, I thought these were good engines? are these unfavored too? anyways I did e-mail Corsa and they replied and I need to call them when I get a chance. I am not sure which manifolds I have, I have heard the terms center and log but not sure which is which, you guys got a pic? I will probably want to know that before I call Corsa. Thanks for the replies guys and have a great day!
