thrust bushing stuck

So I get my new MW prop in the mail, comes with a nice brass drive adapter and nylon cush hub and a brass thrust washer to replace the stock aluminum one on my SX drive.
The problem is that the OEM thrust washer is stuck on the shaft. I've rapped on it some from the sides with a rubber dead blow but it's on there good!

Suggestions? Puller? Heat it and beat on it?
I thought it was just sitting waiting to be removed, but now realize that the shaft is tapered........ :(

Re: thrust bushing stuck

Those thrust washers are all sintered. Sintering is a process whereby a powdered metal is pressed under great pressure to form the part. The advantage is that it is cheaper to make some simple parts than machining them.

Sintered parts are by their nature brittle so if you cut the side about 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep with a recip saw, then whack the cut with a cold chisel and heavy hammer (otherwise know as Fine adjustment Tool), the part should split right off.

Clean the corrosion off the shaft and when you install the new one, use anti-seize.

If you really want to preserve the piece, or are worried about hammering sideways on the shaft, the taper of the shaft is NOT a locking taper, so a gear puller might do it, but it might also break the washer.
Either way, it's off.

Well, it came off intact after a good whack with a ball-peen fine adjustment tool. Guess it needed the "shock " of metal on metal vs the thud of rubber. :D

Re: thrust bushing stuck

PLEASE add grease to that shaft liberly when you put on the new prop and thrust bearing! The prop shaft needs to be regreesed every 20~50 hours of in water use!

It sounds to me like the shaft was bone dry of grease and thats why the SS bearing seised on the shaft...Not good as you see why. Ive used lithium greese with excelent results but since Im all out now I will use bearing greese when I put on my SS prop next week on the cruser :D
