Thrust Washer Question

I just purchased a used SS Michigan Wheel prop (15" x 17") for my 99 Johnson 150. I Installed it onto the shaft and there was a pronounced wobble as well as some scraping sounds on the lower unit housing. The prop otherwise appears to be in almost new condition

Upon closer examination I noted that the thrust washer is a sloppy fit when compared with how it fit into the forward end of the stock OMC Aluminum prop. Additionally the thrust washer actually contacts the rubber on the stock prop while it does not on the Michigan Wheel prop. One more thing, looking at the prop from the rear you can see the hub does not appear to be perfectly centered.

Question: Do I need a new thrust washer to fit this prop, or does it need to be re-hubbed or both?

Re: Thrust Washer Question

Correction.

My original aluminum prop was also a Michigan Wheel so probobly no issue with the thrust washer.. After examining the prop again and trying to re-install making sure to torque to the recommended 60-80 ft/lbs there was still no change. It still wobbles. Strange since the prop is otherwise in good condition

I don't know if someone installed the wrong size hub into this prop or if perhaps the hole is wallowed out. My guess is that the rubber bushing may have distorted. I suppose I'll need to haul this out to a prop shop to be sure.

Re: Thrust Washer Question

A little smaller pic of the rear of the hub would be nice.
Also are you sure its the correct prop for the motor?

Re: Thrust Washer Question

Sorry about the size, I had no idea it would display that big.

Anyway here is a pic of the back side of the hub. There is a little bump that is detectable on the lower left at about 240 degrees.

Kind of thinking that the rubber bushing is distorted and causing the runout. Hopefully a good prop shop can remedy as otherwise the prop is nice and clean.

From the pic i would have to agree with you. it looks to a bit off center. They should be able to rehub it for about 40 bucks or less. Id have them give a good once over first tho, just so you dont toss away good money.

Re: Thrust Washer Question

You may also want to take in your thrust washer and have the inside diameter checked. May not hurt to get a new one. I know mine was a bit oversized and when i put on one of my props it rubbed a bit.
