1971 55HP Chrysler. When started (in neutral) the engine will thump and lurch every 4-5 seconds. Has not been in water yet. I use a garbage can filled with water to test run the motor in. Sounds like metal or something is going to break. I put it in forward gear and it stopped. Back in neutral and it happens again. Any ideas what this could be?

Re: thump/lurch

About the only thing I can think of might be one of the carbs is running extremely lean. If only one carb is running extremely lean the motor can sometimes continue to idle if the other two carbs are adjusted correctly. The one cylinder with the lean condition is basically being dragged by the other two working cylinders. However, every few piston cycles enough fuel will be drawn into the cylinder to provide detonation. When this occurs it may make the motor lurching and skipping along every few seconds as you describe. A fault in the ignition system on one or more cylinders can also make the motor behave erradically.
As for the metallic sound...could be a small piece of metal in the cylinder or behind the piston. This could from a foreign object being sucked into one of the intakes or could be a small piece of piston ring or rod bearing or rod bearing cage.
Removal of one or all the cylinder view ports is a quick and easy way to take a look inside the combustion chamber and a partial view of the cylinder walls, piston rings and skirt.

Re: thump/lurch

My motor has only 1 carb. 2 Cylinders. When I removed the head due to water leaking from top plug. It looked wet in the bottom cylinder. I just figured it was due to removing head and maybe water ran down to bottom cylinder. Bottom cylinder and plug seemed oily and wet to the touch. Top was dry. (It was the top plug that leaked water out). Now when running the motor seemed to run smooth beside the thumping and lurching. Could It be that the bottom is not firing? Would it even run smooth if it is only 2 cylinders or start at all, if the bottom is not firing?

Yes, I have a Force 7.5HP (2 cylinder outboard) and have been fighting a lack of power problem. Pulled the wire off the top spark plug and it ran exactly the same, starts, idles and runs in a trash can fine, just lacks power. The top plug is not been firing which I verified by pulling the plug, wet, but no indications of firing on the new plug.

You may have a bad head gasket letting in water. The water would make the plug appear clean and un fired.Do a compression check or look closely for water droplets on the plug. Perhaps sniff.

Put new head gasket, removed broke bolts and put new ones in also. Started and checked plugs. NO water and not wet at all. Thanks, Does not thump as much but still hear clank here and there. Posted new post on carb started rev high
