hey guys... i have the phase maker system with points on my 9.8 hp.... and i realise that this thunderbolt system produces a high primary voltage that leave your points dark and rough looking...... well i have my flywheel and stator off and the points sure enough are dark and rough and have little arc holes on them if you will..... are these still satisfactory? or should they be replaced... the engine manual says they will still give satisfactory performace even tho they appear to be in rough shape... any input here? im a little confused i thought if the points were like this they need changing :S

Re: Thunderbolt ignition with points

I have replaced a bunch of points that looked like this too and probably did not need to. Mercury manual or Seloc says the rub place on the points will probably wear off before the points give it up. And Mercury says these are not like auto points and rough is ok. I would get a fingernail file (or whatever those gals call those double sided sandpaper nail detailing things) and clean them and reinstall and see if it runs ok.

Good luck!
