hello guys first post here.. Had a thunderboltIV question. My ignition module seems to have gone bad. Is there anyway i can do a whole new setup anddo away with the thuderbolt IV ignition. I have looked at the prices of these things and it seems it would be cheaper to get a new distributor. Dont some have the electronic ignition in the distibutor. Thanks for your help and go easy on me i am a noobie

Re: Thunderbolt IV

Hello chiefalen.
The wiring system is from 1987 but the motor is from the mid 90's hope this helps. I have looked through the sticky but doesnt say anything about changing out and doing a whole new setup. The Newer boats do not have the ignition coil and all that anymore do they? I am trying to do away with all that if possible

Ayuh,...Welcome Aboard,....

Believe it or Not,... Even in this day,+ age,...
A boat motor just will Not run without an Igntion system,+ Coils....

The T-Bolt IV is about the Best, Dependable, cleanest running igntion there is for a Boat....
The current issue T-Bolt V just has a few extra bells,+ whistles, which of course co$t more money...

Up in the Adults Only section at the top of this forum are the factory service manuals,...
Download the 1s you need,+ They'll explain the Testing,+ Service of your T-Bolt IV....

Changin' it Ain't Cheaper, Nor Better......;)

Re: Thunderbolt IV

You could always change the distributor over to a points system..... but it would probably cost the same amount the do that, that a TB4 module costs.

Re: Thunderbolt IV

I wouldn't personnally change over to points from a TB4 system. As bondo said it's a pretty solid system. TB4 has been through a couple of revisions and the newest ones are darn near bulletproof.

Re: Thunderbolt IV

Can we at least change out our distributor to a aftermarket one for the 4.3's?

Why?
Do you have money burning a hole in your pocket?
If you are using a Thunderbolt IV system, you won't find a better system, that won't cost you some money.

Re: Thunderbolt IV

Why are you guys wanting to change ignition systems, what are you expecting to happen? The Thunderbolt 4 and 5 have as high an output voltage as any other system, they are designed to work on the Mercruiser engines, and the have the proper advance characteristics. The advance is also electronic, so you don't have to screw around with weights and springs.
What are you hoping for by changing them?
Oh, and will you know how to wire in your shift interrupt system with a different distributor?

If you guys are thinking you could pull a distributor out of an old junk car for cheap, forget it. First they won't be marine rated which means sparks from inside the distributor could ignite fumes in your engine compartment if there were any, and second, the completly wrong advance setup. for the way a marine engine operates.
