Greetings,
I have a 97' Merc 5.7L with a Thunderbolt V ignition and no Knock Control Module. It's been sitting for quite some time. Last time I had it running on the muffs, everything was fine. I went to pop it in gear and the engine died and that was it, it never started again. That makes me think that it could possibly be something wrong with the Shift Cutout Switch. First thing I would like to do is test the switch.

Does anyone know if this is this normally a normally closed or open switch? Thanks.

The TB-V is Normally Open switch and closes during shifting.

Disconnect the wires and see if it will fire up. Also check for 12V on the coil

Ayuh,.... If the shift switch engaged when ya put it In gear, on the muffs,... Yer lower shift cable is junk,....

The switch engages only when comin' Outa gear, in the water,... Never moves on the trailer,....

just curious but why only "in the water not on the trailer"... the reason I ask... I know you should not shift your outdrive into gear on the muffs but how would the shift mechanism no the difference?

There are no issues shifting into gear on muffs. you cant shift a Bravo unless its running. Alpha dosent matter
The reason is the load on the prop in the water ,the engine needs to "stumble" to allow the shift dogs to come apart. If the interupter is operating on land, the lower cable is bad.
