Dumb as I am, I forgot my garage door was open when a heavy thunderstorm hit while my engine (V6 Evinrude) sat for 20 minutes without its cowl on. The engine and flywheel were soaked, as well as all the wires, starter housing and air cleaner.

I dried everything out with rags and compressed air, and Q-Tips, and more rags.

It seems to me I need to recoat the linkages with grease, but I'm wondering what other steps I should take to be sure I won't have rust developing.

Should I spray anything on the engine or in the starter housing? Should I put grease on that starter gear?

Thanks

You're way overthinking this. I used to hose my engine (w/o the hood on) often. Just let it air dry. If you want, spray it with WD40. That's it.

It's a BOAT motor, it's made to get some water on the external parts, even with a cowl.

I would run it on the flusher for a few minutes to dry out any water that might (might) have made it's way into the throttle bodies. The balance of the motor will laugh at rain water, as it is made for that salty stuff...
