I bought this boat couple years back as a project boat it hasnt let me down as far as giving me things to do to it. I have a 50hp 2 stroke motor on a bay liner capri. I once had problems with speed and adjusting the trim helped that problem but then found out I had cooling problems because of trash in the Therm. Of course I had to work my way up to that point and replace impeller so on and what ever. This engine never really got that hot but did make a little steam. It has always made a little ticking noice in the back when I gave it the throttle. It doesnt make the noise at idel and when it does make the noise it isnt that loud. I have never taken the boat out far and run it for very long because I dont trust it yet so thats why I think I havent done much damage because of over heating. I guess my question is do all these motors make this ticking noise or do I have a loose lifter or something? It almost acts like a car does when the valves rattle from cheap gas. I know in a car if the motor doesnt get the right oil pressure a lifter will tap but if the lifter is bad it taps even in idle most the time. I have checked around the engine looking for loose parts but didnt find anything other then a loose starter bolt. Also could I not be putting enough oil in the mix? I've been adding 50:1.

Re: Ticking from engine area

Valves don't rattle from gas but engines ping or get prignition knock.Sounds like a rattle. Also might rattle from improper timing.
Check the point gap.Should be .020.Be as accurate as possible.
Then check the timing.32 degrees before TDC.Run as little as possible
until you confirm the setting. If you don't have a manual you'll need one.
If its preignition could ruin pistons.50:1 mix is fine.
