Ok need some help, i have a 84, 120 hp. i have a ticking nosie like a lifter, i checked here and found that the flapper may make the same nosie. so i removed it, the engine was rebuilt before i got it and had three bent push rods, so i replaced all lifters, push rods, and rockers, still have the nosie, i have rpm set at 950. if i up the rpm tp 1100 it goes away, any help, thanks richard

Could be and hope it is, just water passing through the manifold. It makes a little tingling or ticking noise.

Re: ticking nosie

On some engines their mechanical fuel pump can make a ticking noise that can sound a lot like a lifter.

Why were the push rods bent? Is the noise coming from the valve cover? whats the oil pressure?

Did you get a look at the cam gears? My gears were getting bad and started with a ticking. One gear on mine was aluminum with nylon teeth.

Re: ticking nosie

At the risk of sounding stupid......never mind one of my fote's.

I had this problem after adjusting the valves one time.
Turned out I had installed the valve cover upside down.
Sure quiets down if the lifters don't hit the cover.

You're probably not that stupid.

Get a stethiscope(sp) and track it down.
A long screwdriver works as a substitute

How does one install a valve cover upside down? Rotated 180 degrees maybe -- but upside down? :)

Re: ticking nosie

ok no the cover is on right, the push rods was bent because it had colasped lifters, and mushroomed the valve stems, removed head replaced valves, lifters and rockers arms. used stehascope and no nosie comeing from cam cover, valve cover or valve cover, and all sounds good comeing out of oil pan, oil pressure holds a firm 40lbs, as far as rpm goes what is it supposed to be???????? it has the same sound a rocker makes when not adjusted right, but i have run the valves for times( sorry about spelling i know thats what spell check is for)

Re: ticking nosie

If this is a flat tappet cam, which I am pretty sure it is, you should never install a new set of lifters on an old cam that has already been broke in. The old lifters break in with the cam. Ask me how I know, I wiped out a cam and a new set of lifters doing this. Pull you cover back off and check for any loose valves.

I beleive idle RPM should be around 500-550

Re: ticking nosie

thank you bond-0 yes that will help i am sure, and yes i did note that the fuel pump was mentioned, yes i do know it is not a good idea to install new lifters on a old cam, and i did run the adjusted the lifters four more times, the idle setting i was useing was because that was were it was at when i got the boat, and since most car engines that i have worked on set ariund that same i used it thinking it was ok, i am sure glade that i joind this forum and got that part fixed, thanks.

What does your Owners manual say the Idle Rpm should be set at? 950 sounds high. My 4.3 185 HP Idle is suppose to be at 700 RPM. If it's too high (950) it's gonna clunk every time you put it in gear and eventually your going to be replacing the U Joints, if it's an I/O as I assume. You never did say I/O.

By the way WELCOME Aboard!
