Tie wraps on fuel lines

I'm finally getting around to replacing the fuel and vaccum lines on my Johnson 1980ish V-90. I'm only familar with motors from the 50's and 60's so this is newer stuff for me.

Tie wraps were used to secure the fuel lines instead of those pressure ring clamp things...don't know what they are called, snap-ring maybe?.....anyway is it OK to use the same size tie wrap for replacement or are they a different material for motor applications? Do I need to get one of those tie wrap guns things that sinch them up tight? Or should I use some other securing device? I believe its not a good pratice to use hose clamps or are they OK as long as you don't crank them down too tight as to cut into the material of the line?

Thanks. I'm sure I'll havemore questions as I go along.

Re: Tie wraps on fuel lines

dont have an OFFICIAL answer, but have a real life answer!!

they were all over every fuel line on the 1988 70 HP i took apart. and they were tight!

I also recently rigged up a 90 hp with a water pressure gauge...bought the hole that had to be heated slightly to soften enough to expand over the fitting on the block...thought that was good enough once it cooled..but the water pressure got about 30 psi and knocked the hose off...

all i had on hand was a zip tie...put it on my hand tight as i could and ran the boat again...ran the water pressure WAY past 30 psi....the hose held.

I doubt that the fuel lines get that much pressure

good luck

Johnson evinrude used a tie wrap BUT they had a curved end so it would wrap all the way around the line.
They are stronger and much better than the standard zip ties.

P/N 320107 will get you a 100 pcs bag of them...tenside strength is 60 pounds.
I think they are like .20 each so you would be looking at a twenty dollar bill for a nice supply of them.

They are nice.

Also you can get snapper clamps that pinch together...sierra makes some as wells as johnson evinrude.

I personally like hte OMC cable ties.

I have also had success with hoseclamps but always worry about them backing out over time. The snapper clamps and zip ties can't back out.

I'm with outboardnut on this one. I like the OMC cable ties. I suspect that they are curved to provide a more consistent clamping force around the hose and fitting, which a regular cable tie would not provide. I tighten mine down with a pair of long nose pliers by wrapping the cable end around the tip and twisting the pliers (similar to opening a sardine can). Come to think of it, do they still open sardine cans that way? Maybe I'm dating myself.

regular zip tie will not work, the OMC zip ties are specifically designed for fuel lines.

Re: Tie wraps on fuel lines

Boy am I lacking in my correct verbage terminology so to speak....I meant to say zip ties and not tie wraps but it seems you guys may have known what I was talking about. Its not a loaf of bread I'm working with here:p

Anyway I'm glad I asked with this inquisitive mind before moving forward. After pulling the carbs to get to a few lines in a tight spot I don't want to do it again. I do have replacement gaskets too.

I called my local marine store and they have the proper zip ties in their shop that they will sell me. I will also be asking about the cable ties too. I believe those are the type that click to tighten but can be removed like ones I've seen on fuel hoses from the fuel tank to the motor.

Thanks a bunch...I'll be back I'm sure with more questions.

I don't see P/N 320107 here at iBoats or at marineengine.com. Any pointers to a source for these OMC ties?

Re: Tie wraps on fuel lines

I also gave that number to my local marine store with no luck but they did know what I was talking about and went back into the shop to get me some but unfortunately they were listed as "General Hardware" @ 20 cents a piece. and yes they do have a curve under the square zip box thing. They said the mechanics like the zip ties and use them more than the type that click as you tighten them...must be the snapper clamps.

I also got some fuel hose that's made by Mercury that the mechanics swear by so I'm going to give it a shot cause it looks good and bends nicely. I figure fuel is fuel whether its Mercury or OMC. Its gota big ole numberonthe hose...C-530-D11-CE-2008-STG-ISO 8469-B1-USCG Type B1-SAE J1527
I knowwhat some of that means but justthought I'd throw it out in case anyone wants to know.
