I was out this weekend and noticed there were a lot of boats out this weekend and lots of them were tied together. Do people know each other and tie off all together or do they randomly tie to other boats? I don't know many other boaters in my area, then again I launch and don't keep my boat in a slip. I like launching my boat, but I wonder if I could meet a lot more boaters by renting a slip. I haven't found a Ski club or anything, most of my friends are scared of water 0_o.

I get out about once a week and I store my boat across the street from the launch.

Our raft-up generally start out with a few friends and their boats, every one knows each other. Then grow with friends, friends and once in a while friends, friends, friends. As for some one motoring up and asking to tie off, I dont recall that ever happening.

Being in the military I have been from on side of the country to the other. I have ended up in them just about every where I have been. But my wife says I can BS with just about anybody. You start off the day tying up with soembody you know and before you know it you have your own yacht club. Looks funny too because I'm the little bass boat tied up between the bigger boats.

When I have done this, it is a get together of a bunch of guys from our marina. We had 15-16 boats last time. We did have a couple friends of friends tie in, and even had a random boat or two tie in (wind shifted, his anchor came loose and it was easier to tie him off to our group, than have him try and go out and reset it).

I have also rafted up with people from this site.

That would be wierd...

Sunday we tied up with friends and the 13 other boats they were tied to, we all shared food/ drinks and had a great time.

Monday I tied up with someone I know loosly, then some friends saw us and tied to our boat and before I knew it, we had another 12 boat red-neck yacht club:)

When I was a kid my parents never tied up with their friends, everyone would anchor near eachother, but I think they were overly cautious with how to use bumpers/ lines/ anchors and felt it was easier to just individually anchor.

It may be different in your area, but it's rare that I've known the people we've tied to. There are a few coves out here that'll have 2 or 3 rows of 50-60 boats tied off. There'll be music and everyone'll be off the back swimming, socalizing, and such.

Go out, be social, and you'll have a bunch of boating buddies in no time!

Where we boat, we usually raft up with people we know and then by the end of the day we are tied up with people we don't know. There are actually several threads on this forum about this very topic. I love to tie up with others that I don't know, we've met a lot of good people.

One thing that has happened, however, in the past is that there will be someone tied up that is a little over the top or where there are children and the person is really out there and innapropriate for little ears/eyes. We meet up with friends all the time and we have had to ask people before to either tone it down a little or leave. Generally speaking, they tone it down and we have a great time. Then, there are other times where its all adults and it seems as though just about anything goes.

Just get a gas power blender. Once you find a spot set anchor and start that sucker up, and you will have people coming to you. Those suckers make magical sound that carries on water :D;)

Re: Tieing boats together and socializing

I just tied up over the weekend in Lake Norman in Charlotte, NC. We were at the sandbar by about 12:30 or so, there were several small groups of boats tied up. We just picked a group and asked to tie up. After about an hour, were were in the middle of 50-70 boats tied up. We were the middle row of 3. It was honestly one of the most fun times I've ever had on the boat.

Anyway, this is a different situation though. Most tie ups are friends. But, if it were me tied up with some friends, I don't think I'd mind you asking to tie up and making new friends.

Re: Tieing boats together and socializing

Here in Australia we call it "rafting up". Generally a pre-organised affair, however on occasion we've wound up in an unplanned raft up especially on Sydney Harbour on New Year's Eve. One time we saw a guy with a massive load of ice on the beach using a little 8ft tender to take three or four bags at a time to his big old wooden cabin cruiser moored about 200 yards away.

I motored over and offered to take the 20 or so bags all at once. He accepted and after we offloaded the ice on his cruiser, he invited us to raft up. Boat people are generally generous in spirit and that's one reason I enjoy boating so much.

sure fire way to make friends on the water is to have a marine barbecue on board :D that smell man, that smell.... turns every head on the water. ive traded burgers for spins on jet skies. lol seriously though if ya see some like minded folk that look cool to hang with, pullin up and sayin ya cooked to many burgers anyone want one, will get ya rafted up in no time.

Cool... now I know when I visit you, you'll understand what I'm talking about. Still can't get the hang of "kawfee" though! :D
