So the admiral and I go to a small beach on the potomac that is very popular among boaters. I see lots of boaters tie up together.

Do you think that most of these people know each other before tieing up?

...most likely not...but they certainly do when they depart !!

We frequently beach in a remote area, often another will beach close by. Before we depart, usually a new friendship has been made.

I spend a lot of time on Lake Cumberland and we always go to two or three areas where you simply pull up and tie up. I have met a lot of great people doing this and we now know a bunch of people down there. We also have met people we don't want to know!

We went to the beach yesterday and met some people on the beach while the boat was anchored out. We are headed back there today and there will probably be a ton of boats in the area as it is supposed to be great this weekend.

Seems to be a bit different here. We make plans to raft up with friends before we go. From what I've seen the raft-ups around us are made up of groups of friends and family, too.

We have had a 'friend of a friend' motor up and ask to join us, and of course that's no issue for anybody, but it's only happened once or twice.

I'll be leaving in a little while to join one. Half of us (4 boats) will stay on the hook tonight. Gorgeous weather again, and forecasted nice and cool for the overnight- I love sleeping out in this kind of weather :)

Yes, it's called "rafting" or "rafting up". In my experience, it's friends or friends of friends. I wouldn't just pull up alongside someone I don't know and ask to raft up.

Some groups may be family oriented, some groups older, some may be "partying" with alcohol, drugs, and naked women. You need to know in advance. ;)

Other considerations are, which boat is the one anchored and can it hold the other boats, height and sizes of the boats and fender placement, and who will be leaving first.

We raft up just about every weekend, with people we know. That being said if someone approached and asked to raft up, I most likely wouldn't turn them away!

Here's a short video from last weekend, we rafted up with 2 fellow Iboats crews.

Not sure if I'll be rafting up today but will probably try and hang with the people we met yesterday. They had a nice cruiser. Makes my open bow like tiny in comparison.

The admiral picked out a name for the boat but I wasn't sure about it. Compared to many of the other boats in my area i might be fitting. She wants to call it "Puddle Jumper"

good name, have fun with the name of your boat. There are so many that have been over done.

If I raft up with another boat(s), I either know them or someone on my boat knows them. Asking to raft up with a stranger is a little rude IMO.

It can be rude, but, a lot of times on certain lakes in certain coves it is expected. Harmon Creek, Lake Cumberland, KY is always hopping. People will actually waive you over.

I would look at asking to join a raftup of strangers as much like asking to join someone's picnic or backyard barbeque. If someone waves yo over, fine. Otherwise, no.

I posted before, but to be more specific, lets say you have your wife and children with you and join a raftup only to have the women on the other boats start flashing their boobs. Or passing booze or drugs around. What do you do then?

Re: Tieing up...?

I ended up anchoring out alone at first yesterday. Met up with some people I was talking to the day before for a bit and they invited me over to raft up.

Was a great evening, going out again today. They all have cruisers so they just stay there for the weekend and live it up.

Well, I think the issues here is that you have to be invited, that's my point. Regarding the kids issues, the parents must use good common sense.

For instance, my wife and I primirarly boat on Lake Cumberland, Ky. Don't know how familiar you are with it but it is the last line of lakes on the TVA Damn line. It's huge, over 1200 miles of shore line.

There is a cove called "harmon creek." This is pretty much a "party cove" where hundreds of boat go every weekend and tie up. This is the type of lake cove were you pretty much have to expect people to want to tie up, if not then don't go. Here's a picture.

Slight correction.... Lake Cumberland is a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers lake.

Yep, you are 100% correct, ACE built it and it became operational in 1951. But the TVA monitors it and a lot of these damns interwork together.

Example = http://www.lakeinfo.tva.gov/htbin/lakeinfo?site=WCH&DataType=All&SUBMIT=View+data

They're still trying to fix it, they are 35% complete. Actually, the entire story behind it is very interesting. Anyway, I still stand by my raft up point....my wife and I have met a lot of fun and good people "rafting up" and will, generally, always invite people to float up and take a load off.

Having had young children on board, we will exercise discretion on who we invite though....

My children are grown and out of town.

My slip neighbor is a great guy but he hosts a lot of parties on his boat. Booze, I suspect drugs, loud music, and naked women. He has a mirror ball in his cabin, tamborine, and cowbell.

He shows me pictures of his parties. One showed a naked girl hanging upside down by her knees from his radar arch.

The naked women don't bother me ;) and my wife would tolerate them, but the drunkeness, dope, and loud music would keep me away. Also, the mess that some folks make when they get drunk.

So - if we have the chance to raft up (difficult with 30' + boats in an area with strong tidal currents), it's with folks our age or younger, more serious people with families aboard.

We were partying people at one time but we've outgrown it.
