Tightening throttle cable

I have a 4.3L Mercruiser and the throttle control is really sloppy. Theres a good 3-4" of play before the throttle will start to adjust. This also makes the boat either speed up and/or down on its own while the throttle control stays put. Does anyone know how to adjust the throttle cable? I've found a ton of info on the shift cable, but nothing on the throttle cable.

Ayuh,.... The "Dead space" in a controller's throw is where the shift cable shifts, before the throttle cable takes up,...

So it's pretty normal, but changin' speeds by itself ain't, so the tension adjustment might be off,...

It might be adjustable, or it might just be plain ole worn out,...

What sorta control is it,..??

I'm not talking about the dead space before the prop engages, this is while I'm moving. I can move he lever back and forth quite a bit with any rpm change. Not too sure what control it is, just the most common one I guess. It's a '10 Tahoe Q5i

Re: Tightening throttle cable

With the engine stopped, disconnect the throttle cable from the carb. Put the control in forward gear and push it down until the cable is at about 1/2 travel. Now grab the carb end of the cable and gently push and pull the end. If you have more than about 9/16" movement, something is worn, either the cable itself or the control box....
