I have an '82 Johnson 25hp (j25rcnb) it came as a tiller control, but I want to change it to a steering wheel and remote controll. I have the little brackets to hold the shifter and throttle to the housing. I have the controll box and cables. I have the Teleflex steering helm and cable, I have the steering arm that goes from the steering cable to motor. My problem is , where most outboards I've seen have a hollow "TILT TUBE" for the steering cable to run through and thread on, mine is not hollow. I had made a bracket that mounted to the transom that held the cable and it worked fairly well. But when lifting and lowering the motor it would put a lot of stress on the cable and bracket being that it wasn't on the pivot point of the motor. Can I change just the stern brackets, or do I need to change the swivel bracket too to install a hollow tilt tube on this motor ?

As you have discovered, any push-pull cable steering you put on that motor will be a compromise. But though I don't like the high offset of the link, here is one solution from T & R marine: http://s19.postimg.org/5edih0var/t_R_steering_kit.jpg It is T&R part number FWK 3475. It's on their website, but takes some hunting to find it. http://www.trmarine.com/cat.html

I think changing the motor to tilt-tube will prove to be a nightmare of parts changing. Your motor has a mounting system designed in the 1950's which was intended to use cable/pulleys steering.
