I have a '59 Evinrude 18hp, the tiller handle is fine, but the grip is stripped. Is there an easy fix or a possible source for this?

Hi Chris,
I'm not sure how a grip can be "stripped"??? If the handle itself is broken or cracked, new grips can be bought at a Johnrude dealer. If the mechanical portion of it is stripped - the ball gears where the handle is hinged to the motor itself, those, too, are available at a dealer...
- Scott

Re: Tiller Handle Grip

The white grip thing on the end is stripped (maybe?). It kinda just pulled off. It looks like it has a screw that holds it on and that screw is no longer catching the grip - it just spins. When I removed the grip it looks like a small X at the bottom with a slit/hole that would grab onto the small rectangular bar that the screw goes into, this is all chewed up - I can turn it down with no problem, but increasing the throttle no longer works. Can I just put a longer screw on it, or does something inside the grip actually serve a mechanical purpose?

Hi Chris,
Yes, there is supposed to be a screw that goes in through the hole on the top side of the grip and threads into the hole in the end of the throttle rod. It's possible that the end of the rod is broken, or possibly the screw was threaded in too far at some point and stripped out the hole it sits in within the grip. There's also supposed to be a spring (for tension on the handle) and an aluminum cup washer that one end of the spring resides in.. All of these parts should be available at a Johnrude dealer...
- Scott
