Ok, I'm a boat newb.
Anyway I have an Evinrude 6 for my inflatable. The engine has a knob at the end of the tiller handle, and I can't figure out what it does? Any one know what it does? Also looking for an online operators manual.

Thanks Bill

Re: tiller knob

It's the idle speed adjustment.
Not immediately apparent even when you know about it but that is what it is!

Actually it works by limiting how far you can turn the twist grip to lower the speed.

If there is a button on the end it is the stop button and on some models the safely kill switch was part of it too.

sorry missed the question when you first posted it.

Afraid no free owners manuals on line, unlike many other makes.
Available from Ken Cook at www.outboardbooks.com. And not cheap either

Re: tiller knob

in the future, give us the year and/or model and you will probably get the quick response your looking for. Best of luck. Rick.

Re: tiller knob

I really appreciate the info thanks.

Its a '95 6 or 8 horse, there is a big 6 on the cover but there is a sticker on the inside that has a 8 horse part number on it, so I'm not sure if its a 6 or an 8

The tag that had the part number on it is missing and it says void where it should be.

now i need to figure out how to work the knob

You turn it.

Clockwise will increase the idle speed ...but its best to open the throttle a tiny bit first.

Counter clockwise will allow you to close the throttle further but there is also an adjustment screw on the carb. Obviously you can't go any slower than this is set.

No stop button or kill switch associated with it on a '95 model.

Re the model. Look for a welch plug on the power head with the numbers stamped on it. I may be hidden by the HT coil. Just visible between the coils on older models with 2 coils.

Re: tiller knob

Ok so now the really embarrassing question. How do I turn it off? Do I pull the clip off of the red button? Or is there a better way? So far I've been disconnecting the fuel line, I know thats not right.

Re: tiller knob

Mine is older ... does not have a safety lanyard ( would not be much use on a sail boat anyway!) But yes you can pull the clip off, but does not part of the stop switch assembly press in anyway with the clip still on? the centre part?

Re: tiller knob

Mine operates by pushing red button in with the clip in place to kill the engine and removal of the clip also will kill the engine.

Re: tiller knob

Cool I thought it might be something like that, just not sure and haven't had time to mess with it. Just have to build a transom extension, so my long shaft outboard will work on my inflatable without trying to drag the back of the boat under and I'll be ready to do some fishing.
