Tiller to steering, 15hp 2st. - 9.9hp 4 st.

My buddy has a 2000 merc 9.9 4 stroke with cable steering on his boat. Someone backed into him and trashed the motor. I found a 2002 15hp 2 stroke with tiller for sale locally. I would like to know if we can just pop the tiller off the 15 and connect the steering cables to it or what would need to be done to make it work. Thanks in advance for your thoughts on this.

Edit: Also, are the control boxes the same for the 2 and 4 strokes?

Come on guys, someone has to know if this will just bolt up. Don't let the guys on the Yamaha forum show you up. If these were Yamahas I'd have 3 or 4 replies over there by now, lol. Seriously though any help here would be appreciated, we would like to pick this motor up this weekend if it would be an easy switch.

I don't have an answer for you or I would post it. Your insulting PM doesn't help your case a bit.

Why would you post a private matter on to the board? If anyone but a moderator pulled that I would bet a ban would be forthcoming. If you don't have an answer to the question then you have no reason to respond to the post.

I guess what they say about everything being bigger in Texas is true. And by the way, I never implied that anyone was "withholding" an answer, there have only been 20 people that even looked at the thread in 3 days. That's why I asked you in the first place, my mistake.

Sorry about that, Jerkin. I should have kept that private. My apology.

My point is that of the 30 or so people that looked at your post nobody had an answer. That includes me. That may be frustrating but it is not reason to complain.

Maybe if we keep this near the top a Mercspert will come along with an answer.

A friend gave me his 15 hp Gamefisher (Chrys/Mariner) that had been converted to steering and controls. I converted it back to tiller. The steering was a cable pulley system. The control box was the old 2 lever type. There was a bracket installed in the housing that was used to change the gear shift on the Gamefisher from front of motor housing to shift inside. There was another bracket that moved the throttle mechanism previously turned by the tiller grip. It remained rope start. I apologize for the very rough description. I still have all these old brackets, etc. If you need more info, I can pull them out and do better.
