tilt and run lever

I have a 1974 70hp johnston stinger2 motor it has a lever on one side it moves up and down on one side it says tilt and on the other side it says run I know it is to be in one of the position when boat is in the water and the other position when you are transporting the boat on the trailer ,but which is which

It should be in the run position while you are operating the boat. That position locks the motor down. If the motor isn't locked down, reverse will climb the motor up out of the water.

If you ever run in a river with the chance of hitting something do not have it locked down then.

Before power trim and tilt I always ran with the motor in the tilt position. If you ever run into shallow water or hit something with your motor it will pop up rather than dig in thus possibly saving the motor from additional damage. In reverse the motor will have a tendency to climb but only if your giving it a lot of throttle.
