Tilt and trim fix

I just bought a boat and the trim doesn't work. When I toggle the trim switch there is no "click". So i think that means the motor is still good? What else could it be. Maybe hydrolics but I'm not sure how to check that. I have a 1979 Johnson 150.

You can guess at it, or you can get out a multimeter and do some voltage checks along the circuit. But before you do that, check the fuse.

Hopefully, when you bought the engine, the PO also gave you the remote trim box, which mounts under the rear splashwell of the boat. Has a second set of main wire cables that connect the trim box to the main battery. Inside it is a fuse and a single trim solenoid. Won't work without it. FR is correct, there is a fuse inside that trim electrical box. Same 20 amp fuse as on the side of the engine's main wire harness. Your trim system has a single trim solenoid, for the "up" movement. It should click when the trim switch is trying to push the engine rearward. When trying to move the engine closer to the boat, there is no solenoid, so you won't hear any click-that's normal. For that movement all current goes through the trim switch in the control box. It is possible that the trim switch has failed in either position. Most likely it would fail in the down movement if it did fail.
