Hi, I have a 1979 glastron with a 140hp evinrude motor. The power tilt and trim worked fine until recently it broke! It still works but there isnt enough power to raise it all the up. Not just that it wont go back down! I hear the pump working but it wont move at all stuck at the tilt trimmed up. After a while of inspection i see oil shooting out of the hydrolic. Is this a easy fix?

Re: Tilt and trim leak

What year is the outboard, or better yet, what colour wiring is coming off of the trim motor? Is this a saltwater motor? Where exactly is the leak?

I would first check the manual release valve, ensuring it is tight and closed.

Then ensure that the oil resevoir is full and topped up.

Is the electric motor trying to run?

Re: Tilt and trim leak

sorry havnt gotten back earlier, kinda busy. Thanks for your help tho. It is a 1979 evinrude fresh water. I do not know which color is running there but i will check it. The leak is right on top of the hydrolic canister? and the motor is trying to run. I can still tilt the motor up to a certain lvl but not full height, then it gets stuck. It wont go down no matter what i try. What causes this problem?

Re: Tilt and trim leak

Did you open the manual release valve on the R side like suggested? (R side looking from the back of the engine.)

If this does not allow you to lower the engine, then you have some corrosion problems.

Oil shooting out of any location is not good, and if not from the manual release valve area will probably require a rebuild. If so you need to invest in a good OEM manual. Not aftermarket. They do not provide the level of detail for repair of TT units. There is quite a bit of info about removing the unit here on the board...Just do a search.

Here's hoping its a simple problem!
