Tilt and trim leak

I have a 1991 Evinrude 48 hp special with a single cylinder tilt and trim. I took out the fill plug and added oil as I raised the motor until if was all the way up. Put the fill plug back in and the motor stayed up just fine, no leak down.

I ran the motor down just fine but it sat there and leaked all the oil out thru the shaft at the top of the cylinder.

Is this seals in the cylinder or something in the pump?

Re: Tilt and trim leak

it is a design flaw in the e/j single ram. They used a nitrile radial shaft seal and a u-cup. They do not last and frequently break after the age of 14. Most single ram trim systems use a rod wiper and an o-ring. It is much less expensive and rarely breaks under 20 years of age.

The 435567 OMC seal kit will fix your problem but an aftermarket kit with rod wiper and oring will fix it longer. You'll also need a $30 face pin spanner wrench to take off top (such as armstrong 34-154). face pin spanners often show up on ebay for $10-$15
