Have 1988 Mercury 150. The tilt and trim rams are leaking down. Motor and pump reuns good. Trying to decide whether the problem is the rams are the valve body. How do you prove which is the culprit? Also need to find where to purchase a trim sender.

First thing to do is check your manual relief valve and make sure its not loose.

thanks did that and went through the manual procedure of getting air out and topping up with fluid. The one reason that I suspect ram problems is that everything works good up and down. The reason I would suspect the valve body is only because the tilt ram and the trim ram are leaking down. need a place to puchase a trim sender also.

The manual release valve can cause leak down even if its screwed in tightly. I just replaced mine for the same reason. It turned out the tip of the valve had cracked off, which let the O ring move out of position. The hardest part was getting the broken tip out so I could install the new one. I used a straightened out fish hook held in a set of hemostats to snag it.
