I have a 1983 Mercury 50 Hp motor that the tilt motor is bad. I have been looking online but everything I see is for replacement motors only. The one I have looks like it is not possible to remove the motor only. I want to get the right thing the serial number is 6150790, anybody know where I can find the part number? the one that was on the unit is unreadable.
thanks

So that is the motor and reservoir in the boat, right? You used to have to buy the motor and upper part of the trim pump as an assembly. ARCO made them. Not sure what part number you need, but what I do know is that ARCO made at least 2 different ones that looked very much the same. The difference was the length of the armature.

IMO, your choices are to take the original to a starter shop and see if they can rebuild it, or find a used one (flea bay or the like), or try to match up a new ARCO one, if they still make them.

One more thing. It looks like the armature is still available. So if your field is good, you can order one, along with new brushes.

Also, check for an overload inside the trim motor. It is a bi-metal circuit breaker. They can get a bit of dirt between the points, and the motor acts dead.

Thank you for the info, been looking at replacements but from the online pics not sure it is set up to mount the pump under the oil sump.

The pump itself is contained in the bottom of the pump/motor unit. There are several stainless screws and a rubber oring connecting the motor and the upper part of the reservoir to the lower part of the reservoir, containing the pump unit.

The ARCO replacement unit is the pump and upper part of the reservoir. You install the oring and screw the new motor and upper reservoir to you existing bottom of the reservoir, fitting the armature into the pump.

You know the more I think about it the more I need to investigate this. The tilt motor engages in the down mode. The motor just switches polarity to raise, if the motor works one way it should work the opposite way. I replaced the solenoid and all the wiring looks to be original installation, time to figure it out.

Well I am an idiot, when I got the boat the up on the trim motor did not work so I replaced the solenoid that looked old. The new solenoid did not solve the problem. I decided I would switch the 2 wires on the two solenoids to see if it would work. When I loosened the lug on the "good" solenoid I discovered that the power lug I noted that the post is loose and probably the bad link, I was trouble shooting the wrong solenoid. Embarrassing but cheap I saved the old solenoid.

Mark, There are two types of PTT motors. The 3 wire type (original on your PTT), uses solenoids to provide power to one side of the PTT motor winding to run it up or down. The other side of the winding is open, and the center of the winding is grounded. Polarity is not switched.

The newer PTT motors are 2 wire. They use relays to provide power (when energized) to one side of the motor winding. The non-energized relay provides ground. The polarity switches, when the other trim direction is selected.

I have two power wires going into the top of the trim motor, each of those wires go to an individual solenoid.
