Hey guys,

Anyone know if it is possible to add electric tilt/trim to an old early 70's 60-65HP Johnson. It currently doesnt have one only a single ram between motor and transom. It looks like there may have been a second ram at one stage but it has rusted off. Was there ever an original or after market kit. The control box does not have a switch or extra wiring so I guess not.

Is there some other Johnson or after market mechanism that would fit that anyone could recommend.

Any help much appreciated. I can add some pics later if that would help.

cheers

If they did exist for those early 70's motors it would have been rare.....even harder to find a good used unit now methinks.....by all means post those pics up and lets see what you got.....

You could keep an eye on ebay for used CMC PT-130 aftermarket unit, you might get lucky, unless you think the motor is worth forking out for new .....one of these will set your motor back about 6 inches though....

Many thanks.

Was hoping that another model might be similar enough to be able to fit something. I have seen a few on Ebay that look like they might fit but I guess I'd have to have one to be sure. The CMC models are a little pricey for an old motor so I guess I'll keep a lookout for something.

It'd sure be good to have forward control when I'm solo but I dont want to break the bank too much on this re build.

Caution: old systems were often "Tilt" only, and not intended to trim under power.

Caution: old systems were often "Tilt" only, and not intended to trim under power.

Several of the older, dealer installed accessory units were "power tilt" only, and not intended for use as "power trim"... They were strong enough to tilt up the motor when off or in neutral, but not strong enough to come up while the propeller is spinning.

They also were barely functional at best, and hardly reliable by today's standards.

I totally agree with the advice to add the CMC model PT-130 system for those needing power tilt&trim. One word of caution is to make sure your steering cable can accomodate the engine being 6 inches further back from it's current position as some older boats had access only to an engine mounted directly to the transom (some cutting or a new hole drilled for the steering cable may be necessary).

Here's a REALLY good deal on one near Atlanta, GA (not mine): http://athensga.craigslist.org/boa/2754970187.html
