tilt and trim problem

i have a 1981 mercury 200 and it wont trim down anymore. itll only go up... i noticed a few weeks ago there was a second or so delay when i pressed the down button that it would actually work...i guess theres a loose connection somewhere...ived looked at the switch on the throttle lever and the wires and connections are good there...idk where else to look now? not too keen on mercs...any help as to where to start?

Best thing to do is check your down solenoid(I'm assuming yours has two like my merc 175) The down solenoid will have the green wire from your pump going to it. Second, check your connections. I wouldn't change your trim switch before the solenoid, cause if it's the solenoid, it'll be about 20 bucks! Good luck
