Tilt and Trim problems

Hello,

I don't know if this is even the right spot to ask but here goes. I have a 1997 200hp johnson Venom on a 1998 Triton SF21 and my problem is with the tilt and trim. It slowly leaks down, noticable if you watch it. At times it has been very noticable but when it is like that, I've loosened the manual release and just held the trim up button for 10 seconds or so several times and then tighted the manual release back up and the problem would go away or atleast back to a slow leak. I talked to my local boat mechanic and he said that the tilt and trim units can't be taken apart and rebuilt like they used to be, it would have to be replaced. Any ideas or suggestions? thanks.

The first thing to do is replace the manual t/t release valve. Be sure to take the circlip out before removing the valve. Also get the correct valve. They are different depending on horse power of mtr.

I think your mechanic is mistaken about rebuilding the PTT units. Johnnyrude sells a complete seal and oring package for my '98 Johnny 150HPV6. I would be surprized it that kit did not fit your PTT unit. Look on the crowleymarine.com website for the part number. The pistons are sealed by Orings. Perhaps it is one of those that is bad, or some other part.

You have what is called a "Fast-Trac" t/t unit. The only thing you can't service on it is the valve body. See my comment on post # 2.

thanks a bunch guys! think I'll ask around to see if I can find another mechanic that might have more confidence in working on it versus just replacing. My mechanic was telling me he'd just replace with a used one he had laying around that was in good shape for 400-500 plus labor.
