I have a 1978 70 HP Johnson motor the motor went bad on my tilt and trim so I replaced it. The new motor will lift the boat motor but it does it very slowly and the wires and relays get very hot. The diffrents between the two motors on the tilt and trim are: the old motor only had two wires and the new motor has three wires. any help will be appreciated.

Re: Tilt and Trim Problems

Hi Blue Sky, That outboard would have come from the factory with the three wire motor, but if you removed a two wire motor, someone has already upgraded it to the two wire system. the three wire motor should NOT be wired into the relays, This is causing a short in the wiring, that's why the relays are getting very hot. Change the motor again, putting the two wire motor into it.
