I am desperately trying to find a complete tilt/trim unit for my '73 Johnson 85. Certain limitations with my boat make the CMC type aftermarket units undesireable as I really can't do with the 6" or more setback. So we all know that there is one type of unit used from ?-'78 with the rams on the outside of the transom bracket and another type used from '78-? with the rams on the inside of the bracket. The problem is the newer type shows up on eBay all the friggin' time and the older units very RARELY. I have placed numerous emails and phone calls to marine salvage and used outboard places trying to locate a unit to no avail. A particular auction on eBay right now (200114524405) has raised some questions for me. The guy says it's an '80s unit and it looks like one. But he said he used it on a '76 115. Is it possible to adapt an older motor to one of the newer units or does this guy have his years messed up?? Also if anyone has a lead on where I might find a compatible unit please do share! Power tilt & trim would make a HUGE difference to my boating happines, especially launching and retrieving.

I am currently on the same cursade as you; but my motor is a 73 135 Evinrude. I am willing to stand corrected, but what I have found is that all the V4's up through the 115 hp 77's has the old style exhaust housing. Starting with the 140 hp 77 the exhaust housing changed. Look on the BRP website and not how the exhaust housings are attached to the swivel/transom brackets/Tilt and Trim assembly, especially the lower mounts. That's where they differ.

Long story short, the 77 115 down and earlier have the bubble gummed setups. The 77 140 and later have the internal/integrated tilt and trim.

My next idea is to look at the larger Chrysler setups. The older models had the tilt/trim cylinders between the brackets with the pump mounted on the outside of the starboard transom bracket just as the Evinrude does. I just need to check the length of the hydraulic cylinders.

I do know of an old outboard graveyard near Crivitz, WI that has the early Tilt/Trims for around $250 and shipping. That's just about the going price on Ebay, when they can be found. If you are interested in giving the guy a call, let me know and I'll dig up his phone #.

Thanks burroak. You have a PM. "bubble-gummed" is a good description of those old units.

Ebay has one like you need right now ending Sunday the item # is 300115807674. I've got the same problem but I just took all of it off and now just manualy letting the motor up and down just use it for pulling skier's and riding the lake so I can get away with lowering when putting it in and raising it when taking it out. money's to tight right now to spend on a tilt motor but good luck on your hunt.

Try BUDGET BOATS in Chesapeake VA (area 757); they seem to have tons of stuff you'd never imagine!
