Tilt and Trim Switch on Controls Up stopped working

Well, it never stops with this thing. I'm finally about done with this '93 60hp motor rebuild, and now all of a sudden the tilt/trim switch on the controls doesn't work for going up. It is fine with going down, but not up. It still works on the motor just fine (the switch on the side of the cowling). So, is this switch replaceable? Or can I fix it? I'm wanting to sell this thing, so I don't want it to have any problems, and I know if the switch didn't work on the controls and I was looking at buying it, that would deter me since you can't run back and forth to the motor every time you need to tilt/trim the motor.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thank You

it is replaceable, or you can just put a toggle on the dash.

Well, I don't have a dash, so I'd prefer have this thing in 100% functional condition before I attempt to sell it. I doubt I'm even going to get my money back that I put into this thing ($1500), but hopefully as close as I can get.
It was a great learning experience though.
So, how do I replace it? Is the part online or just any switch will do that works the same and fits the hole?

There are many types of remotes and different parts for each. If you go to the BRP/Evinrude electronic parts catalog site and navigate to your motor, you can find the common remote controls. If you don't find your remote, select "OB Accessories" from the pick list and search through until you find yours. The part number will be listed with the diagram.

It's either the switch or bad wiring. Look at the blue wire coming from the solenoids on the motor. Clean the connections on the solenoids and the switch itself.

If this was the case would the switch on the motor itself still be working?

$52 for the switch from BRP seems a bit much for just a switch, any other options for one that will fit directly into the controls? I only found 1 on ebay, still $50 after shipping.
I will take the controls apart and check just the switch and make sure all is good with the wiring, but it just doesn't feel like the switch is engaging any more.

Check with sea-way.com on the price. Some dealers will discount older parts if they have overstock.

If it's a problem with the solenoids no but if the wiring is bad going up to the switch on the controls then yes. You may be right that the switch is bad. I'm just saying check the wiring first so you don't have to spend the money if it is just a bad connection. A little corrosion will do a lot.

Yeah, I will definitely check the wiring and all out first, my time is free, parts are not, LoL.

Same thing happened to me. Turned out to be a broken wire inside the handle. 2 minute fix. Take your handle apart and inspect. Hopefully it's just that simple.

Re: Tilt and Trim Switch on Controls Up stopped working

I took it apart today between thunderstorms, and man, this control has seen better days. The screws in the back were shot to h*ll, I had to grind new slots in them for a flat head (now I gotta buy 3 new screws for that). Upon taking it apart and getting the handle off, a plastic disk with 3 screws in it, part #90 in the pic below:
controls.png

It literally fell out when I pulled the handle off.
Anyways, now to the switch. It feels like the switch is working fine (I will have to test at a later time, another nasty storm came up and forced me inside), but the plastic mounting tabs used to hold it in place are both broken off. I'm thinking of just trying epoxy or something to glue it back in, since I don't feel like dropping another $50 on this thing (sea-way.com was $41 + shipping, $50 total). Does anyone have a good suggestion as to how to glue it back in, or just go at it?
And now, what is that part #90 for, and what's it supposed to de/be for? It's been loose and messed up a long time best I can tell, the loose screws have torn up the handle a good bit from vibrating around.

Looks like that is the stopper for the handle. It stops it in certain positions such as neutral. If you don't have that in there the handle will slide way to easily and not lock into position.

The notch in the top of Part 90 controls the lockout for the handle - the part you squeeze when you shift from neutral into gear. It usually gets broken if too much pressure is applied without depressing the neutral lock first.

If you keep a search running on Ebay, you can probably pick up a used unit for all of the parts for a reasonable amount. There are a lot of used ones in the salvage yards that are serviceable.

Well, that part is only $6.xx from BRP, so if I can make the tnt switch work for me I will probably go that way. I'm gonna be out of town until Monday, so I won't be able to check the switch until then.
Thanks for everyone's advice and input, I appreciate it.

Re: Tilt and Trim Switch on Controls Up stopped working

Update: I got back from vacation on Monday and finally had time to check my switch. I plugged it into the harness, and all is good. So, this left me trying to figure out how to re-attach it to the inside of the control. The mounting tabs were broken off. I held it in place and gobbed some 5-minute epoxy all around it. Once it dried, it's not going anywhere now, and you can't even tell from the outside. I still need to get some assorted hardware before I put the rest of the controls back together.
The lockout for the handle referred to in the previous post seems to be in ok condition after I cleaned it up, but the screws are shot to hell, so I need to buy some new ones, along with the 3 screws that hold the control box together. I had to cut slots in all of them to get them out, as the previous owner had mauled them trying to get them out. Thank God for a Dremel and an impact driver.

Re: Tilt and Trim Switch on Controls Up stopped working

Final update on the controls. I got some assorted hardware from West Marine, including 3 screws for the neutral lockout, and 3 screws for the control box itself that hold it together. Had to shorten the 3 screws for the neutral lockout bu about 1/6", but got them all cut down, got the neutral lockout bolted back in to place securely, got the handle back on as well, and now it's all back together, and working quite well. I was having a hard time with the lever when shifting gears or throttling, and after seeing the mangled screws and neutral lockout, I see why. Not it's like butta baby!
Thanks for everyone's help and advice. I appreciate it.
