Tilt and trim will not trim out (up)

I have a 1985 Johnson 115 Outboad motor on a Procraft Bass Boat. Neither the tilt or trim would go up (out). I can loosen the manual release valve and can pick the motor up off
the T-saver and I can force the tilt piston in. Note: If I tighten the manual
release valve while motor is down, I cannot begin to budge the engine up,
although if I hold the engine up by hand and tighten the manual release
valve, it will not hold the engine up.

After studying the hydraulic diagram that came with manual, I took the Tilt and Trim unit out and found that the tilt
cylider will retract under power, but will not advance. I pulled the motor
out, it does  runs in both directions. I replaced the tilt/trim relief valve, to no avail. I am at the point, that at looking at the hydraulic diagram, there
could be a number of thing that cause this problem. What I need is some
sound advice as to how to narrow the possibilties. I would appreciate any
suggestions at this time.

Remove the internal snap ring holding the manual release in. Remove the manual release screw and and check the end for seal deformities. It may be best to replace it and the .25 cent o ring that goes around it. This system is very high pressure low volume so if there is any leak by it won't lift even though you can't move it by hand it may still be leaking through the manual release. When removing it a drip pan is needed to catch the fluid and a tube to refill will be necessary. Good luck.

I have a 1992 Johnson 100 hp that had a similar problem. I traced the wires from the t/t switch on the motor and found the relay housing. When I switched the relays the motor would run up but not down. Then I went to NAPA and bought a new relay. After replacing the relay it worked both ways. Had to "marinize" the relay by smearing a little silicone on the contact end. Cost me $6 for the fix.

Thanks LarryC,
Since the motor runs in both directions in response to the switch, shouldn't this rule out the solenoid being a part of the problem?

I guess if you can run the t/t motor from the switches when it is out of the unit then the relays must be ok. If, however, the motor is running while out and you have simply applied electrical power and bypassed the switches, the problem could be with the relays.
