1989 - 70HP Evinrude. I pulled the boat out from the winter storage, hooked up the batteries and raised the motor to put the holder back in position. When I went to let the motor back down, it does nothing. Now it wont go up or down. Motor turns over to start, but tilt/trim wont work. I have checked the fuses. ANy ideas? It does nothing from the motor or the throttle handle. Checked a few more things. It clicks when you push the up button, but when you push down it makes a buzzing noise.

Check the two relays in the little black box (4x5") just above the carburators... Give the relays a tap and see if the trim kicks in.. ;)

Can you crank engine ? I have a Yamaha 150 with same problem, only I didn't check if it did crank, after several tiouts (never tried to start motor, I was concentrated on tilt & trim, I discovered there is a fuse on + line that was blown, replaced it, now T & T works and motor cranks fine.

The motor cranks, I already checked the fuse. I am at a loss.I was just raising it up, I stopped to get the transom saver and put it in place. When I pushed the button to lower it, nothing, then tried to go up nothing. I am at a loss.

I have evinrudes that pulled the same thing last summer. Found two problems;
1) pulled the switch at the helm apart and found it was badly corroded. Not an easy replacement part to find since they seem to have changed since '86 so I just cleaned it.
2)Check the wires running to the tilt motor where they go near the transom. Somehow mine developed quite a rub and it exposed the wires to salt and.... Again I was able to clean them up and applied liquid electrical tape which got me through the season.
